prefer to learn face to face? we hold lessons and consultations at the bangalow barn — a beautifully restored barn in the byron bay hinterland, a few minutes from bangalow village. unhurried, private, and a long way from a fluorescent classroom.
the barn is also a place to stay — book it for a weekend, a retreat, or a quiet week away, and bring a project to work on while you’re here.
beyond the teaching, we take on a select amount of made-to-order work. everything below is real and made in-house — press play, drag the slider, try the live app.
01 — writing
a whole novel.
memoirs, life stories, speeches, letters, blogs, business copy — ai drafts, a human shapes it, the voice stays yours. here’s an original four-part novel we wrote start to finish.
There were one hundred and seventeen steps from the foot of Carrick Light to the lamp room, and Wren Ashcombe had climbed them so many times that her legs no longer counted. She climbed in the blue dark before dawn with the oil can in one hand and her mother’s shawl pinned at her throat, and at the top she did what her family had done on that rock for three generations. She kept the light.
keep the small light burning, the long way round is true; the wanderer is returning —

the candles
By the third day she had stopped pretending she wasn’t reading their letters.
It was the photographs that undid her: a whole drawer of them, turned face-down, as though the family had looked away from itself. In every one, the same girl at the same birthday — six candles, then seven, then eight — the cake changing, the wallpaper changing, the girl never once growing older.
She was still holding the last of them when she heard the key in the door. They weren’t due home for a week. A coat went onto the peg beside hers. Footsteps crossed the hall. And then, from the top of a staircase in a house that was meant to be empty, a child’s voice — bright, expectant — called down to ask whether she had remembered the candles.
copy that earns its keep
“an hour here is longer than an hour anywhere else.”— a hinterland day spa

“a room that asks nothing of you — stay as long as the light does.”— a boutique barn stay
poetry · an original
we have grown used to each other the way a house grows used to weather: the door that sticks in winter, the stair that always creaks on the seventh step.
i know the side of the bed you’ll take, how you take your tea, the tune you hum when you think no one is listening. none of it is grand. all of it is ours.
and if you asked me what i wanted now, after all these years and ordinary mornings, i’d say: this. just this — you, the kettle, and the light coming up.
— “ordinary mornings”

who’s behind it
a patient pair of hands.
latebloom is a small studio in the byron bay hinterland, run by jay — a local developer and tutor who helps people create with ai. mostly it’s teaching: private, unhurried tutoring and clear-headed consultations. and when you’d rather it was simply made, jay makes it for you: writing, music, voice, art, photography, video, websites, code, photo editing and restoration.
and we’re honest about it: ai helps with the drafting and the doing; the idea, the taste, and the voice — the part that matters — stay yours.
we teach. we guide. and we make.
questions
good to know.
do i need to know anything about ai already?
not at all. most people arrive with a vague idea and a little overwhelm — that’s exactly the right place to start. we go at your pace, in plain language.
who is it for?
mostly locals around the northern rivers with time to spare and a head full of ideas — the kind who’ve always meant to write the book or restore the old photos, and who’d like to use ai well, without the hype — and anyone who’d simply rather we made the thing for them.
are sessions online or in person?
either. one-to-one over a call, or in person across byron bay, bangalow, mullumbimby, lismore, ballina and the wider northern rivers, by appointment.
do you teach groups, or only one to one?
both. as well as private one-to-one tutoring, we run small-group workshops and short courses — including the eight-week late bloom course — for people who’d like to learn in good company. small groups of four to six, a kind pace, and no one left behind.
will you just tell me to use ai for everything?
no. part of the job is saying so when the honest answer is “you don’t need ai for that.” no jargon, no hard sell.
what does “we also make things” mean?
when you’d rather not do it yourself, we make it for you — writing, music, voice, art, photography, video, websites, code, photo editing and restoration. ai assists with the craft; the idea is always yours.
